How To Remove A Contact From Gmail (So Useful)

How To Remove A Contact From Gmail (So Useful) Have you ever sent someone an email to the wrong address?  That is, to an address they used to use, but they dont use anymore? Note: This is not a JibberJobber tutorial. Its a how-to-get-more-out-of-your-email-client tutorial. I do this more often than I want. Its because a year ago they used a certain email address, but then they switched. I cant remember what email address they use now all I know is that when I start typing their name in my email client (I use Gmail, but what Im about to share will apply to most email clients), a short list of the email addresses that I might want show up and I simply choose one. Sometimes, the email address I choose is one they dont look at anymore. The best thing to do is to remove that address from the list that pops up. That way, now and forever, you wont even see the bad email in the list. How do you do this? Its simple (1) You go to Contacts. In Gmail, right above the Compose button, youll see Gmail with a down arrow/triangle. Click that and youll see an option for Contacts.  Didnt know that was there?  I bet most people never go in there! (2) Then, search for the bad/wrong email address. The search box converts from searching your email to searching your contacts. Paste the bad email in the search box, and click search. (3) Then, click the checkbox of the bad email address. This selects the bad email address. (4) Then, click the MORE button, and the first option is to delete the contact. You can test to see if this worked by going back to mail or Gmail, and typing in the persons name.  You should now only see the good email address, and not the bad email address. And your life is simplified How To Remove A Contact From Gmail (So Useful) Have you ever sent someone an email to the wrong address?  That is, to an address they used to use, but they dont use anymore? Why Company Culture is Essential for a Successful Business

Why Company Culture is Essential for a Successful Business Every company has its own unique culture, made up of the working environment, the special ways that things are done and the people who make up the team. The culture of a company can affect lots of aspects of the business, from talent attraction and the  retention of existing staff, to the brands reputation among the public and the industry. The company culture plays a large role in your job satisfaction, as if the work environment doesnt match your personality and working style you could experience a clash of interests. Therefore, for a business to build a workforce of staff who are motivated to achieve their best and are going to stay with the company long term, its important that they hire people based on their culture fit. This infographic from Washington State University explains just how important company culture is and the impact that it can have on employee happiness and attracting the top talent to the organisation. A few  examples of a really strong company culture Walt Disney Corporation  are one of the most widely known brands in the world and they have built a fantastic employer brand by getting their employees involved.  The brand focuses on making dreams come true, so staff are trained to treat all of their guests like royalty. SouthWest.com focus on providing exceptional customers service and one of their employees volunteers at Ronald McDonald housing, making balloon animals for kids. Zappos  pride themselves on the great customer service that they provide and their staff are well known for going the extra mile to help customers. How does culture affect the hiring process? Talent attraction College students were willing to receive 7% in starting pay, if they could work for a company who shares the same values as themselves. Employee fit  Employees who are hired based on their fit with the company culture are more likely to build stronger bonds with colleagues, contribute their ideas to the organisation and stay at the company for longer. Employee retention 46% of new hires quit or are fired within 18 months. Some of the reasons are a differing preference of communication style, the way feedback is given and the amount of openness that is expected. How does culture affect  employee happiness? Companies with a strong culture have less staff turnover than those who dont. Happy employees can be as much as 31% more productive. Employees who are actively engaged in their company culture are more likely to receive a promotion and report high levels of job satisfaction and engagement. How can your business create a great company culture? Acknowledge good work from your staff, as employees are more likely to continue putting in a high level of effort if they feel their work has meaning and is appreciated. Offering incentives to encourage employees can actually be counterproductive.  Qualities that work as better motivation are autonomy, mastery and purpose. Employee motivation can be improved by allowing employees to manage their own work, offering training opportunities and making them feel like their work matters to the business as a whole.

How to quit every job and still have a good resume

How to quit every job and still have a good resume Melissa is back. She stayed with us on the farm a little while over the winter, telling me to shut up, and playing with me in the snow. I think by now you get the picture that Melissa is one of those people who breaks every rule and lands on her feet. One of the things I really admire about her is that she quits a job as soon as she knows its not the right fit for her long term. 1. Keep rewriting your story so that it makes sense. I dont think Ive ever told you that Melissa worked at Ogilvy in NYC. Her stint was less than a year, but long enough for her to become an search marketing genius. Not that shes doing anything with that knowledge. Its interesting to know, she told me. And everyone should live in NYC once in their life. For as long as they can stand it. She took a finance job in Hong Kong and retooled her resume to tell a new story: Her developer resume showed a child prodigy programmer becoming an Ogilvy SEO queen. But she changed it to a sales resume where she is an Ogilvy account management and moves seamlessly into hedge fund sales. Its all true. But good storytelling on a resume requires selective shifts in focus for each job description. 2. Do two jobs at once to hide a job that is death to a resume. Then Melissa quit her private equity job in Hong Kong with tons of tax-free money in her bank account and fled the finance industry to become a nanny in Milan. It seemed like a great job. Theres one kid in the family. Hes nine years old and hes in school (the British school) until 3pm. For this, Melissa was earning the equivalent of US$100,000 per year. Heres the area where she was living: The idea was that shed hang out in Milan for a year, but shed also do some sort of official launch of a career coaching business where she helps me put a lot of my individual career coaching online so that I can do more coaching over the phone. And then, I told her, she could drop the nanny job from her resume and say she spent the year building a coaching business. Her resume will look fine. 3. Leave when things get bad. A good resume is not worth a bad year of work. Youll notice, though, that we never got to the career coaching part. It turns out that the family is one of the most wealthy in all of Europe. The boys father inherited a luxury brand that I am not going to name because Im going to tell you that his kid is a monster. But first, heres what the job was like. The house has a live-in staff of 35 people, plus security, which was important because the dad has the only complete record of a famous recipe. In his head. At first Melissa thought her job was to take care of the kid. Then it seemed like maybe Melissas job was to speak English at dinner so everyones English stayed good. But really, only the dad talked with Melissa. About business. And she found herself researching topics in the day to talk to him about at night. When the dad was gone on a business trip, it seemed like Melissas job was to take care of the mom, who has never worked outside the home and does not appear to have any duties inside the home. So, for example, when the family went to the weekend house in Switzerland, the dad and the boy rode together in one limo and the mom and Melissa rode together in a second limo. The first problem was that the job was insanely boring. Dinner discussions with the dad were interesting. But in general, the assumption at this house is that the life of the super rich is so interesting that it makes intellectual stimulation unnecessary. People spend their lives on the compound, raising their children there, exchanging their own lives for the glow of the household-palace they serve. Melissa said, I had too privileged a childhood to think this life is interesting enough to stay. Melissa quit. The father was horrified. The father told the agency Melissa is the perfect candidate. I told her forget it. Just leave. But Melissa felt bad quitting. She wants to be someone who sticks with something. So she agreed to stay on. 4. Once your instincts tell you to quit, dont second-guess yourself. Melissas job was to be on call for the boy, but he had no rules. He has been raised by nannies. His English was impeccable, including a wide range of swear words and personal insults he used on Melissa in front of the parents. Melissa told the nanny agency there were problems. The nanny agency said they had already recommended to the mom that she take a break from nannies and try parenting. Melissa negotiated a month of extra vacation, which she had to fit in between accompanying the family on vacations to Bermuda, Capri, and the French Alps. Then the boy, who maybe sensed the idea of a nanny quitting after only three weeks, went on full attack. He clubbed her with a croquet mallet, swore at her in impeccable English, and stole her iPad when his ran out of power. Melissa told the mom, He just told me to fuck off. The mom said, Alors! and shuffled into the boys bedroom. Honey, she said, please dont use that language. Its not nice. The boy growled at Melissa. The mom walked away. Melissa quit again. Probably ten minutes before she was going to fall in love with the dad. Which would have made for a great story. But fortunately, the story gets good because she had nowhere to go. She called me from the cafe down the street from the house because she gets no cell phone reception at the palace. 5. Cover up periods in your resume when you are flailing. I tell her she could come to my house. I loved when she was here last time. She said it would look bad on her resume. I told her she could say that she was working for me. She could make it look like she was looking for a job instead of failing at a job in Italy, and I am the job she found. I told her I was starting a company. She could put it on her resume. She was concerned. Goats? You want me to put goats on my resume? Say agri-business. Thats a good city-girl word. Shes wasnt convinced at first. I dont know anything about goats. Its just like any other startup. Startups are formulas. Whatever the product arena is, you go through the same stages of being lost and running out of money and having a marketing plan that doesnt work. 6. You have to take so many risks to find out where you fit. Mitigate other risks wherever you can. Melissa says she cant work at a company thats not funded. She cant run out of money. I tell her Im funded. She says okay. I tell her Im not funded enough to pay her a salary. But anyway, theres nothing to buy on the farm. You dont need money. She says, How about if I fund the company? I can invest the $15,000 I saved in Hong Kong. Then its okay if I dont know that much about goats. Ill still own a portion of the company. So great. I have two investors and a company and a good friend living with me. We decide this on Tuesday. On Wednesday she flies to Madison. It takes her almost 24 hours to get here, which gives me time to ask the Farmer if Melissa can live with us again. How is she going to earn money? he asks. Shes working at my new company. Whats she going to do? My kids overhear; they scream in glee. Melissas coming. Melissas coming!I get her iPad firstNo, it was my turn last time she was here!Lets decorate her roomHow long will she stay with us? Yeah, the Farmer says, How long will she stay?

How Appreciating Your Staff is a Win-Win for All

How Appreciating Your Staff is a Win-Win for All Everyone likes to be appreciated and nowhere more so than in the work place. Today (March 3rd) is Employee Appreciation Day, and while you may snigger or roll your eyes at the thought of such a day existing, surely it cant be a bad thing. Now there is the argument that you shouldnt just appreciate your staff just one day a year, a bit like the case for loved-up couples on Valentines Day. Surely if you appreciate someone you should tell them whenever they deserve the praise not  just on one day a year. But why is it important in the workplace? A recent survey by OC Tanner  found that  employees who received recognition at least one time in the past 12 months saw marked improvements in several areas compared to employees who didnt receive any recognition. Why should you  appreciate your employees Drive engagement Disengaged employees costs the economy $300 billion a year. Thats a fact. And you can boost your employee engagement by showing appreciation. Employee engagement is not just about happy employees, although it does help if you have a happy workforce. You may have heard the saying a happy wife means a happy life well the same can be said of your employees. A happy workforce in terms of engagement can have an effect on the amount of energy, effort, and passion employees bring to their work. And that’s important to bottom-line success. Retain talent Now this goes without saying. If you appreciate your employee and let them know just how much you appreciate them then the chances are they will stay committed to your company. They are unlikely to go elsewhere, or worse still to your biggest competitor. If they talk about how much they are appreciated at work then theres a good chance this will also help to attract new top talent to your company. Here are 5 ways to retain your top talent  as well as showing them appreciation. Increase trust Trust is the main driver that makes a company a great place to work. But the American Psychological Association reports 1 in 4 workers don’t trust their employers. Trust can be anything from past interactions with their company, whether they feel like things are done fairly and transparently, and openness in communication. It can even be measured by whether their values are consistent with the company’s values, how reliable the company is, and their perceptions of their company’s motives. The bottom line is trust is the expectation that workers can count on and rely on the company they are working for. How can you appreciate your employees? Just saying thank you Yep its as easy that. Be it face to face, in an email or in a staff meeting, just saying a simple thank you goes a long way to make an employee feel appreciated. The best thing about using this method of appreciation is its completely free. It doesnt cost you anything to say a simple thank you, but the rewards your company will reap by this small gesture is priceless. Gift vouchers Who doesnt like a bit of retail therapy? Whether you  want to shop till they drop or get your hands on that new must-have gadget, offering your employee gift vouchers as a way of showing your appreciation can go a long way. Some companies have things like employee of the month rewards where one employee is singled out for the great work theyve done and are often rewarded with high street vouchers or gift cards. Sometimes actually giving something as well as saying thank you goes a long way in making an employee feel appreciated. Caroline Stokes, founder of FORWARD, says: It’s important to acknowledge and recognize good work in the moment. Not once a year. Not just during review time. Maybe once a week if it warrants it, or even once a day can accelerate engagement and growth. For example, if you see that your employee or peer is consistently contributing strong ideas to the team, you can publicly acknowledge it in a meeting, or in a 1-2-1 with a ‘I have noticed in many meetings that you consistently bring strong ideas to the table and it makes a difference in moving the team forward with challenging issues. I want to take this moment to thank you for this, as it’s made a difference to our performance as a team The reason why many companies, bosses or colleagues don’t do that is counter-productive and counterintuitive. People get down in the weeds too often and focus only on problems, which can lead to burnout or a desire to work in a place that could scratch the itch of feeling fulfilled elsewhere. Employee appreciation can go a long way in making your business a success or a failure on many levels. So if you havent done it for a while or, in some cases, not at all, then what are you waiting for? Let your employee know theyre appreciated. Here is an infographic OC Tanner have put together from their survey results.

Five places to move to for work if you cant live in London - Debut

Five places to move to for work if you can’t live in London - Debut This post was written by an external contributor.  Chinyere Ogwe lists five places to consider living in for good career prospects that arent London. For many graduates, moving down to London after finishing university is the goal. It’s where many prominent sectors are located, and it’s the capital city with a lot of opportunities on offer. But for some students and graduates, moving to London is near impossible, or not a priority. Even though many careers are London-centric, it is possible to carve out a successful career outside of The Big Smoke. Here are some of the alternative destinations for high graduate prospects if you can’t (or don’t want to) live in London. Leeds Leeds, West Yorkshire, is the third biggest city in the UK and is constantly growing. Loads of graduates and professionals are choosing to locate to the city for opportunities and a cheaper way of living. The city has a diverse economy, with sectors like law, retail, science, marketing, digital media, creative, SMEs, publishing, healthcare, finance the biggest outside of London and IT taking prominence. You can find plenty of graduate roles here. Leeds is the place to be  to enjoy the perks of living in a metropolitan hub. From a variety of eateries, to the vibrant cultural scene, to the entertainment. But to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peace of the countryside, you can drive to the Yorkshire Dales. There are loads of rural landscapes within a reachable distance. Manchester Manchester is ‘the land of Coronation Street, Oasis and world class football’ but it’s also a place that’s full of wonderful job opportunities. This city has the second biggest media hub in the UK. So if your goal is to work in the media but you don’t fancy the move down to the capital, then look no further than Manchester. This city has a lot to offer without those astronomical London prices, being 30% cheaper. Enjoy the historical and cultural aspects of Manchester, as well as the social scene, music, entertainment, sport, shopping check out the Trafford Centre and the nightlife. And youll be close to the countryside! Plus, if you like a curry, then there are plenty of places where you can indulge on Curry Mile. Also, check out Manchester if you’re looking for your dream role in the marketing, advertising, public relations, technology, creative, energy, environment, financial, logistics, healthcare, digital and design industries. Bristol Bristol is a lovely place to live as a student, but it’s also a wonderful city to live in as a graduate. Voted the Green Capital of Europe in 2015, Bristol is a peaceful city that’s steeped in history. Its also well-renowned for its local eateries, cafés, bars, cycling and Banksy. Even though the main aspect of the Bristolian economy was focused heavily on the sea trade, it now focuses on other sectors as well. These include creative media, finance, electronics and the aerospace industry. Birmingham The second biggest city in the UK has an economy worth £121bn. Its one of the best cities in the UK to live and work in, so you can be sure to come by plenty of job opportunities here. Birmingham is a city that’s a destination for transport, retail, health, finance, higher education, manufacturing, insurance, law, creative media, consultancy, engineering and events. As it’s the second biggest city, you’ll never run out of things to do. From dining out at various restaurants, to enjoying the entertainment, to visiting local attractions i.e. the Bullring and points of interest. Living in Birmingham will cost you 22% less than the national average cost of living. However, the starting salaries for graduate jobs in Birmingham tend to be the same as the starting salaries in London. So, this means that you’ll get more for your money. Edinburgh Okay, so Edinburgh isnt the cheapest place to live. However, it’s certainly beautiful, and many graduates choose to stay here after they’ve finished university. The lifestyle in Edinburgh is certainly desirable. Edinburgh offers a wide range of small independent stores, leisure and outdoor activities, security and opportunities for further education and employment. As for employment, Edinburgh offers plenty of graduate opportunities in banking and finance, technology, management, transport, sales and engineering.
